The menopause is a normal stage of life, but it can bring many physical and emotional changes.
For non-verbal women, expressing their emotions during this time can be difficult. As a caregiver, our awareness, patience, and understanding can make a huge difference.
Menopause usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. This is when the body gradually stops producing the hormones Oestrogen and Progesterone.
This can cause:
- Hot flushes or sweating
- Mood changes
- Anxiety or sadness
- Irregular or no periods
- Changes in body temperature and tiredness.
These symptoms are common, but for a woman who cannot describe them, they may lead to confusion, frustration, or behavioural changes.
As a team caring for a non-verbal menopausal woman, we as her carers need to observe any signs of:
- Discomfort or pain
- Facial redness
- Hot flushes,
- Restlessness or verbal noises.
When the hot flushes occur, we should provide immediate cooling, using a portable fan or a cool/damp cloth on their neck, face or wrists. Monitoring the symptoms is important to establish if there is a daily pattern.
Menopause is a natural change, not an illness. For our SU, this transition will require extra patience, observation, and compassion. Through gentle care, good communication, and professional support, we can help her experience this stage of life with comfort, dignity and understanding.
