Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service

Becky Burke and Stephanie Rivers, from Care First 24 attended the Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service on the 15th May at Westminster Abbey.

This service is an annual event to celebrate nursing and midwifery communities worldwide to come together and give thanks and celebrate the importance of supporting one another through challenging times. The service is held in partnership with the Florence Nightingale Foundation.

Florence Nightingale was known as ‘The Lady with The Lamp’ as she made her rounds at night tending to the soldiers wounded in the Crimean War, and the Lamp is central to the commemoration service.  The lamp is inscribed in memory of Mrs Kathleen Dampier-Bennet, a committee member of the Foundation from 1951 – 1968, and dedicated by the Dean of Westminster at the service on 12th May 1970, the 150th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.  It has been used at every service since.
